The Bone Marrow - Stem Cell Transplantation

Our associate hospitals offer multidisciplinary and individualized diagnostic and treatment services for patients with cancers of the blood and bone marrow. Blood and bone marrow transplantation (hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a proven lifesaving treatment option for patients with cancers of the blood and blood forming organs. Blood and bone marrow transplantation can be a curative therapy for many diseases, such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other hematologic cancers.

Bone Marrow is a spongy tissue within some bone cavities which contains contains two types of stem cells known as Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). There are two types of bone marrow which are called as red marrow and yellow marrow. Red bone marrows contains hematopoietic stem cells , yellow bone marrow contains mesenchymal stem cells.

Hematopoietic Stem Cells can produce blood cells , mesenchymal stem cells can produce non blood cells such as fat, cartilage and bone. Bone marrow transplant may be necessary if the bone marrow has been damaged by a disease.or if bone marrow damaged permanently by high dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment which were performed to treat cancerous diseases.

A bone marrow transplant does not involve major surgery; rather, it’s performed similarly to a blood transfusion.

In a bone marrow transplant, bone marrow cells are collected from a donor’s bloodstream or through a needle inserted into a bone, typically a pelvic bone.

There are two types of donor situations:

  • Autologous, using the recipient’s own cells
  • Allogeneic, using donor cells

The cells are then transferred by an infusion (or reinfused, if autologous) into the patient’s bloodstream.

In both cases, the infused cells are hematopoietic stem cells, which, once transfused into the patient, help the body produce new blood and immune cells.

The hematologists at our associate hospitals work closely with immunologists, radiologists, intensive care physicians to provide the full range of diagnosing and treatment services for patients with cancer and blood diseases.

Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)

Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) also called as stem cell transplant is a medical procedure performed to replace the damaged bone marrow which has been affected by a disease such as leukemia, aplatic anemia with healthy bone marrow stem cells. In some cases to destory the abnormal blood cells and stem cells needed high doses of chemotherapy and radiation. Unfortunately these treatment protocols not only destroy the cancerous cells, they also destroy the healthy cells in the bone marrow.

Bone marrow transplant allows to treat diseases with high dose chemotherapy and radiation by enabling to replace the damaged bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells after the high dose chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. The healthy stem cells can be obtained from the patient’s own (autologous transplant) or donor’s blood or bone marrow (allogeneic transplant).

The Stem Cell Transplantation Sources

Our associate hospitals perform stem cell transplantation from all cell sources including;
Autologous Transplant: In an autologous stem cell transplant, a patient’s own peripheral blood cells or bone marrow is transplanted back into the patient, in combination with high-dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Allogeneic Transplant: Allogeneic stem cell transplant is a procedure in which peripheral blood cells or bone marrow from a healthy donor are transplanted into patients suffering from cancer or disorders of the blood.

Syngeneic Transplant: Stem cells are received from an identical twin.

Matched unrelated allogeneic transplant: The genetically matched peripheral blood cells or bone marrow from a unrelated healthy donor are transplanted into patients suffering from cancer or disorders of the blood.

Haplo Related: Stem cells are received from a half- matched donor. The donor is usually a family member. Parents are always half match to own children.

We pride ourselves on helping to our patients to find the options of care which are the safest, modern and most minimally-invasive. Hematologists in our exclusive network are among the Turkey’s most successful providers of advanced treatment blood disorders for adults and children, including cancers of the blood and bone marrow. Our pool of highly trained hematologists committed to providing excellent medical services to our patients. Our surgeons have had between 20 – 40 years’ experience in their field. Our doctors are cable of implement the most innovative drug therapy and advanced diagnostic methods.
